Abstract - Rare moss species on roof tiles - Grimmia
laevigata and Grimmia ovalis are two rare moss species which
normally grow on rocks from the plain to the high mountain area. Schmidt (1927)
mentioned the occurrence of them on roofs of some houses near Freiburg,
south-western Germany. These observations could be confirmed recently, and
during a survey many new localities were found on roofs in Südbaden. The
reasons why these two species are able to colonise such ecologically different
sites (roofs under warm climate) are discussed. It appears that the
availability of handmade roof tiles which were made from clay and burned under
anaerobic conditions is essential.
Abstract – Cinclidotus confertus Lüth sp.
nov. is described and illustrated from Vikos-Aoos National Park in
northwest Greece. It is a compact, brownish- to blackish-green plant with
densely set leaves. In its papillose and reddish-brown peristome teeth the new
species resembles C. mucronatus
(Brid.) Mach., but
differs in its entirely smooth laminal cells and shorter setae, 4–5 mm long.
Abstract
– Dicranum transsylvanicum Lüth is
described and illustrated as a new species from the Apuseni Mountains in
western Romania. The new species resembles D.
scoparium Hedw. in habit and D.
crassifolium Sérgio, Ochyra & Séneca in microscopic details, especially
in its partially bistratose lamina cells in the upper half of the leaf, but
differs in having a strongly spinose leaf lamina on the dorsal side,
irregularly dentate leaf margins in the upper part and a triangular stem in
transverse section.
seit 50 Jahren in Deutschland vorkommt.
Abstract: On the remaining dump of a previous
mine in Kappel near Freiburg, Southwest Germany, the moss Scopelophila cataractae was found in march 2002. It is the first
record of this species in South Germany, and the third for Germany. The first
record of Scopelophila cataractae for
Europe was in 1967. It can be concluded, that this heavy metal-tolerant species
has existed in Germany at least since 50 years.

(NW Griechenland).- Archive of Bryophyte, 2, Bonn (pdf 955kB)
Summary: The Vikos-Aoos National Park is
situated in the Pindos mountains in northwestern Greece, close to the albanian
border. Its Bryoflora until now is only poorly known. The paper describes the
Bryoflora of the limestone region around the mountain village of Vikos in ca.
800 m a.s.l.. The occurrences of the ca. 150 moss and liverwort species in
different habitats were sampled or assessed, including road verges in the
village, dry stone walls, epiphytes on shrubs and trees, riverine and wetland
species, montane grazed shrubland (“Phrygana”) and rocks, and alpine grassland.
Many of these species were recorded the forst time for the Pindos region, and
some are new for Greece. One species (Cinclidotus confertus Lüth) was
new discovered and described.

Abstract: Lüth,
M. 2003. Ulota hutchinsiae. Phytosociology and ecology of an extremly
rare moss species.
A large population of Ulota hutchinsiae has been discovered in the Black
Forest ("Schwarzwald") in southern Germany. The site requirements of
this moss species were analysed using phytosociological relevés and ecological
observations. A number of new localities with Ulota hutchinsiae were
discovered during a systematic search for similar (micro-)sites in the
Black Forest, in Bavaria, Austria, Switzerland, and France. The knowledge about
phytosociology, ecology and site demands of this rare moss species could be
improved and is presented in this paper. The subassociation Grimmietum hartmanii Størmer 1938 ulotetosum hutchinsiae
subass. nov. is described by means of 60 phytosociological relevés.

In
erste vereinzelte Wiederfunde gemacht. Neuerdings gibt es auch Funde von
zusammenhängenden Populationen.
Abstract: In the 19. century, Ulota
coarctata was still widespread in montane forests. The records decreased at
the begin of the 20. century until the species was almost extint in Germany. In
Baden-Württemberg, it has been found for the last time in 1927. Only few
populations survived in Bavaria. The first rediscoveries were made in the late
nineties. At present there are again larger populations.

7-17 Final version,
which erroneously has not been published
Abstract: New and remarkable records of bryophytes from Venezuela,
Brazil, Costa Rica and Ecuador are reported. Diphyscium chiapense and Hedwigia
ciliata var. leucophaea are new to South America. New to Venezuela are Aphanolejeunea
sintenisii, Drepanolejeunea andina, D. crucianella, Grimmia reflexidens,
Metzgeria claviflora, Pilopogon peruvianus and Racomitrium subsecundum;
Calypogeia subintegra, Grimmia navicularis and G. trichophylla are
firstly reported for Brazil; Aphanolejeunea microscopica var. africana, A.
minuta, A. sintenisii, Cololejeunea bischleriana, Drepanolejeunea andina, D.
granatensis, Metalejeunea cucullata, and Hyophila nymaniana
represent new records for Costa Rica, and new to Ecuador are Alobiella
husnotii, Aphanolejeunea subsphaeroidea, A. truncatifolia, Diphyscium
longifolium, Erpodium beccarii, Macrocolura sagittistipula, and (for
continental Ecuador) Marchantia berteroana. Further new records to the
states of that countries and rarely collected species are listed. All specimens
are deposited in the private herbaria of the authors, duplicates in different
herbaria as indicated.

pensylvanicum (Splachnaceae) is Recorded from the Southern Hemisphere.- The
Bryologist 108(3): 415-419 (pdf 508 KB)
Abstract: The genus Splachnum is newly recorded from Brazil based
on a collection from Santa Catarina. Inferences from two chloroplast loci, the trnL-trnF
region and the rps4 gene, indicate that this sample is closely allied to
the primarily North American S. pensylvanicum, but differs by several
mutations. Examination of populations of S. pensylvanicum suggests that this
species is fairly variable morphologically, and that the Brazilian specimen,
although atypic, cannot be distinguished from the Northern Hemisphere
populations. The population from Santa Catarina is only the second record of
this species from South America and the first from the Southern Hemisphere.

Abstract: LÜTH, M. 2006. New moss records of
the south-western Germany; and some comments to critical species. - Herzogia
19:
It is reported from Grimmia dissimulata as new for Baden-Württemberg, Ditrichum
crispatissimum, Grimmia anodon und Tortella bambergeri new for the
Black Forest and additional records new for different regions in the
south-western Germany. Also there are comments about distribution, ecology,
phytosociology and morphology of some species like Dicranum majus, Ditrichum
flexicaule, Drepanocladus revolvens, Grimmia arenaria, Polytrichum
pallidisetum, P. perigoniale, Rhizomnium pseudopunctatum, Schistidium spinosum,
Splachnum ampullaceum, Tayloria tenuis and Tortula vahliana.
Summary: We studied infraspecific morphological variation within European
Dicranum majus Sm. A principal components analysis based on six leaf characters
scored in 82 specimens revealed two distinct plant types. Plants with bistratose
submarginal upper leaf lamina cells, numerous spine-like dorsal lamina projections,
a costa that is dorsally rough far down and has two layers of guide cells
in its basal part, and falcate or strongly
falcate, long leaves are mainly of a relatively southern origin. Specimens
with a unistratose, smooth upper leaf lamina, a costa that is dorsally rough
only above and has one layer of guide cells, and with slightly curved to straight,
short leaves were only collected in northern Europe. Even if most authors
do not formally recognize variation within D. majus, our results suggest that
the two kinds of plants should be recognized at least at the
variety level. In view of the confusing nomenclature in Dicranum it is beyond
the scope of this paper to find a name for the northern plant. Type material
of D. majus var. orthophyllum A. Braun ex Milde, a name that was frequently
used for northern North American plants, belongs to the southern phenotype.

Dies
ist gleichzeitig der zweite Nachweis für Deutschland. Der Fundort bei
Freiburg i.
Abstract: The European endemic and rare moss species Ulota rehmannii
is reported for the first time from the federal state of Baden-Württemberg.
This is the second record for Germany. The locality at Freiburg i. Br. seems
to be a hotspot for bryophytes, because several other rare species, like Ulota
coarctata, Orthotrichum rogeri, O. pulchellum and
Cryphaea heteromalla have been detected there.
Abstract: The epiphytic moss species Orthotrichum rogeri is endemic
for Europe, therefore listed in Appendix II of the FFH directive. The species
can be found in several regions of Europe, but is rare or very rare in all
localities. In Southern Black Forest, O. rogeri has one of its centres of
distribution, its ecology and phytosociology was studied there. Based on systematic
mapping of 150 occurrences of that species and related site descriptions,
conclusions were drawn about several site characteristics. Investigated parameters
were topographical localisation in the landscape, exposure of microsites,
position of the moss colonies on the carrier tree, and species and d.b.h.
(Diameter at breast height) of the carrier trees. For 62 trees the pH-value
of the bark was measured, and for 66 occurrences phytosociological relevés
were recorded. Based on that, the phytosociology of O. rogeri was analysed.
With respect to the site, it appears that cold air drainage and therefore
cool nights are essential for the occurrence of that moss species.
